Ninja Gaiden- Dragon Sword

Description

Ryu Hayabusa's Dragon Sword.

The blade is made of poplar. It was cut out with a jigsaw and shaped with a palm sander. The bo-hi was done with an engraving cutter bit on my dremel, then sanded smooth. For the pattern on the edge, I cut it out on painters tape and then put it on the sword and spraypainted a different colour than the rest of the blade.

The habaki is just 2 pieces of poplar carved out, glued together and then shaped with a dremel.

The guard was probably the most difficult part of the sword. I originally intended to carve all the details out of the half inch piece of red oak that it was made out of but the proved to difficult. So instead of carving out the fine details on it, I just carved out the main areas it was made out of. For the fine details I used a combination of styrene and fabric paint.

I normally don't make seppa for my swords but I didn't want the fuchi or the sheath to rest awkwardly on the guard. For those, I used 1/4 inch poplar which I dremeled and filed down to 1/8 of an inch. The fuchi and the sheath have the same shape as the seppa.

I decided to shape the tsuka with a file instead of a palm sander this time as the palm sander would have made it extremely difficult to shape it conforming to the fuchi. The kashira is 2 pieces of poplar glued together and then shaped with a file. There is an opening in it for the ito to go to the other side. After the kashira was painted, I added the fake rayskin which is a basketball or football(I forget) textured paper. The ito is just shoelace.

The sheath is 3 pieces of poplar glued together and then a koiguchi(also made of poplar) added. I shaped this with a file as well in order to give it the same shape as the seppa. For the detailing on the koiguichi, I used the engraving cutter on my dremel and then a few strips of styrene on the ends. The styrene coverd the koiguchi seams nicely. The other details on the sheath are also made of styrene.
